Why Classmates.com blows butt

$2.46 per month, just to see what some random jerk-off from 5th grade is doing now? Really? I’m curious, but not $2.46 per month’s worth. And I bet you have to pay for a year up front, no canceling after a month just to see what it’s all about. How greedy can they be? Aren’t the banner ads bringing enough revenue? Seriously, I don’t know anyone who’s not cheap like me and actually paid for the membership. If I did, they would catch massive rue-age for not letting me gravy train off their account.

Anyway, hey Classmates.com: NO ONE WANTS TO BE A GOLD MEMBER. Give us the shit for free already, because we really don’t care that fucking much. Also, everyone’s inevitably going to drift towards Myspace and Facebook anyway. Am I right?

You are right. And if you ever make the mistake of signing up for Classmates, they will spam the everlovin’ FUCK out of you for millennia to come. I still get their lame-ass spam every now and again, and it’s been at least 5-6 years since I signed up. I cancelled my membership almost immediately, but.. heh heh heh.. too late. They had me. I was fucked.

Reunion.com is just as bad, if not worse.

And, as you point out, do I really give a shit about people I haven’t seen in 30 years? No.

Three former classmates contacted me from my Classmates listing. The first was a guy who friend-stalked me in high school and couldn’t — or wouldn’t — take a hint that I had no intention of “hanging out” with him. Ever. And now here he was again, back to his old tricks.

The next was a girl who said she fondly remembered all the great times we had in 7th grade, when I was “her best guy friend,” and she mentioned classes and teachers that I remember having. But I had absolutely no recollection of her whatsoever, even after I looked her up in the yearbook.

The last was a guy from 6th grade that I hated. We had a fistfight the last week of school, then we moved that summer and I never saw him again. Now he’s sending me an e-mail (“Hey guy, long time no talk, how’s it hangin’?”) and a photo of him and his wife and two kids, now living in Texas, all four of them wearing giant cowboy hats. On certain days when we were kids, he had to stop playing early and go home because it was “bath night,” which confused me, because every night was “bath night” in my house. So when he wrote me from Classmates, I wanted to write back and ask him if it was bath night.

    Yeah.. Classmates blows.

HAHAHAHA! I forgot to mention the endless spam! That’s why I gave them an email that I rarely use. No one’s ever contacted me from Classmates, because I don’t think the 5 people who have viewed my profile would spring for the monthly fees either. At least your losers aren’t cheap.

It’s nice to see I’m not the only one who hates Classmates.com and all of those other “reconnect” websites. Great piece, but…tell us how you really feel. ;)

Well I actually had a good experience, but it’s not exactly over yet. I signed up and paid a few months ago. It’s about to expire, so I wonder if they’ll put a gun to the head of my entire profile and threaten to delete it, pics and emails all. I don’t mind residual spam as I have great filtering.

I found one guy I’d lost touch with and was glad to reconnect. Two girls I was really glad to find. One, as soon as she remembered me she of blew me off which I totally cannot understand. I mean I only hit on her once, and it was like extremely subtle and gentlemanly and no law enforcement were involved. The other I’m still having a long and warm email exchange with. Worst of all I couldn’t remember exact last names, so Kathy if you read this, hit me up. I so wish I hadn’t stopped you!

Does anyone know if when I write to someone, are they able to reply without paying? I also found some people I’d been looking for in other cities because I could search based on name and state. I sent them emails but no reply yet.

But the worst WORST thing is that the person I MOST wanted to contact, who was like a big sister angel, her last name was Smith. She had 4 siblings and I believe I have remembered their names right, but I had to go through 30 pages of Smiths to see. Haven’t heard from any yet. What a dumb idea the way western civilization recycles names like bowery cigarette butts. I’d have named my kids uniquely but they’d be really pissed by now.

Bob, you crack me up. It’s not stalking if the law is not involved, right? I think, though, that people you respond to can’t write back if they don’t pay. I always get the “Someone left you a message! Pay $2.49 now to find out who!” And I’ve tried to be wiley and include my myspace/facebook info on my profile to make it easy.

Yeah, I’m sure your kids will be grateful someday to have normal names. Good call.
